This work was inspired by the destruction of several ash trees around our home as a result of an ice storm in late December 2013. I thought that this particular tree was not damaged very much but it was also infested by the emerald ash borer. While this tree was being cut down I took photos. You will see the horizontal gaps in the drawing of the bark which represent the slices into the tree.
The oval shape behind the tree drawing is a rubbing (frottage) of the base of the tree. The inside and outside of the tree are presented together. I feel that this drawing keeps alive the memory of the tree.
This drawing was included in my solo show, "Plant(s) Matter," in the McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. It was awarded Best in Show at the Markham Artists Group Juried Show. The price is for the work unframed. It is finished on the sides in black.
